The 24th Annual Jewish Music Festival SF Bay Area, CA
A Program of the Jewish Community Center East Bay

|
Dear Chana,
|
|
This newsletter comes to you after a visit to gloriously-springtime
Amherst, Northampton
and Boston, where
I visited with Ari Davidow, founder
of Klezmershack,
the online home of "world music from a Jewish slant," and his partner Judy
Pinnolis founder of the Jewish Music Web Center.
Both websites and people are great resources for Jewish music. I also finally made
a trip to the National
Yiddish Book
Center, where Hankus
Netsky (JMF, 2005), their
Vice President of Education, and
founder of the internationally renowned pioneering Klezmer Conservatory
Band showed my friend and I around. He led us directly to the sheet music
section, where I found gems such as the Marseilles
in Yiddish and the Yiddish poetry of Aliza Greenblatt, Woody Guthrie's
mother-in-law, set to music. I've been following the progress of this amazing organization
for a long time. What I didn't know, is that lots of the music and books are for
sale. I left poorer in pocket, richer in spirit.
Other Festival news: Our 2008 JMF artist
residency project and finale concert known as the Ark continues its maiden
voyage-virtually on the KQED program SPARK, June 11 (see below.) And-as the
finale concert of the Jewish Cultural Festival in Cracow, Poland,
Saturday, July 5. This is a really good excuse to check out that festival and root for the home
team!

THE BREW: Beth Custer Ensemble and Black Olive Babes
|
JCC of the East Bay 1414 Walnut Street, Berkeley Saturday, May 31, 8:00 pm $10 JCC East Bay members, $15 general Tickets and info at the Brew website.
The Beth Custer Ensemble's diverse array of projects-from
musical theater productions (Ballad of Pancho & Lucy, Le The, and June in a
Box, all with collaborator Octavio Solis) to silent film scores to avant-pop
compositions-fluidly blend the group's influences of jazz, funk, and Latin rock.
Featuring the crème de la crème of Bay Area musicians, including drummer Jan
Jackson (who plays with Grammy-nominated Will Bernard), guitarist David James
(The Coup, Spearhead), iconic pianist Graham Connah, bassist Lisa Mezzacappa,
and, of course, Beth Custer (Club Foot Orchestra, Clarinet Thing), the band
bursts forth with a genre-defying repertoire.
Black Olive Babes, a new project led by Juliana Graffagna-a
twenty-year veteran of the premiere women's vocal ensemble KITKA-kick off the
evening with a mix of concert and dance tunes derived from Albanian, Romani,
Greek and American traditions, showcasing a catalogue that jumps effortlessly
from the American ballad Wayfaring Stranger to the Albanian standard Valle
Korcare.
